âThis is weird,â said the lean, dark-haired mercenary into the cell phone.
He sat in the driverâs seat of the dark blue van with the Parker Plumbing sign. Beside him sat another thickly muscled ex-Marine, his head shaved bald. He had binoculars trained on Davisâs apartment building from their inconspicuous spot in the side street.
âWhatâs weird?â asked Beale over the phoneâs speaker.
âI just got eyes on Brad Davis. Heâs hiding behind a fence down the block from the apartment. But my cell phoneâs still working. So, he doesnât have a jammer, but you canât see his GPS signal, right?â
âNothing,â said Beale. âMaybe itâs the GPS chip. We need to examine that chip. If possible, we also need him alive. But if not . . .â Beale didnât need to finish the sentence.
âYeah. Okay by me.â The driver turned to his bald partner and shrugged offhandedly. âHey, a little wet work, a lot more money. Take the front. Iâll circle the van around to the next street and come up from the back.â
The bald-shaven mercenary slipped out of the van, keeping his jacket closed to hide the shoulder-holstered nine-millimeter pistol. He sprinted to the front of the building taking a quick look through the glass door into the downstairs hallway. He ducked through the front door, backing into a small alcove containing a wall of mail boxes. He pulled out his pistol and screwed on a silencer, chambering a round and clicking off the safety. He nestled the pistol under his coat, should anybody come in to check their mail.
Periodically glancing out of the alcove, he could see anyone who came in the back door and up the back stairs. He waited.
After a few minutes, he heard somebody come through the back door. He heard the elevator door slide open, and a quick look around the corner told him it was their target getting on. He waited for his partner, and when he heard the back door open again, knew he should take the elevator up. His partner would take the stairs to box in their quarry.
They reached the third floor together, with the dark-haired mercenary moving to the door to the Davis apartment, while his partner remained on watch over the other three apartments on the floor.
The dark-haired mercenary listened at the door, gingerly tried it, and finding it locked, took out a set of bump keys used for lock-picking. Choosing one that matched the Schlage door lock, he inserted it, and deftly gave it a series of sharp taps with his gun butt until he detected the latch open and could quietly turn it to unlock the door. He screwed a silencer on his pistol, and quietly chambered a round, motioning to the other mercenary to join him.
They burst through the door, slamming it back against the wall, and dashed down the hallway, stopping at the bedroom. There, Brad sat at his desk, his fingers on the computer keyboard. They leveled their pistols at him, and he turned and regarded them with a cold stare.
